Freedom Train
Tuesday, January 5, 2010
The Florida Theatre, 10am 12pm
Admission $7.00
Grades 3-7
"Freedom Train" tells the thrilling story of Harriet Tubman, the intrepid conductor of the Underground Railroad, in a fascinating series of highly theatrical scenes that use dance, dialogue, and traditional music of the period. Tubman was born a slave, but when she was 25 she made her perilous escape from a Maryland plantation. Pursued by dogs and relentless slave catchers, she followed an escape route laid out by Quakers – secret hiding places in churches, barns, cellars and homes. The escape route that Tubman followed soon became known as the Underground Railroad. In the dark of night Tubman made 19 secret trips up creek beds and through swamps, guiding more than 300 slaves to freedom. "Freedom Train" is a story of self-sacrifice, dedication, and survival, laced with warmth and a sense of humor that celebrates the human spirit.

The Florida Theatre, 10am and 12pm

Nine-year-old Peter Hatcher's life would be sweet if it weren't for Fudge, his toddler terror of a brother. Two Beans Productions captures all the humor, sibling rivalry and elementary school angst of Judy Blume's book in their play "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing," Fudge seems to get away with everything, whether he's throwing a tantrum at the shoe store, acting like a bird on the jungle gym and knocking out his two front teeth, or scribbling all over Peter's homework! It's enough to make him feel like a fourth grade nothing! When Peter's beloved pet turtle disappears, he just knows that Fudge is behind it. This is the last straw -- how can he get his parents to pay attention to him for a change?

"Cows that type? Hens on strike! Whoever heard of such a thing!" Farmer Brown cries. When his granddaughter Jenny comes for a visit, Farmer Brown declared the farm a "tech-free zone." He confiscates her laptop in the cold barn along with the shivering cows who use her computer to type messages requesting blankets. "No way," replies Farmer Brown. "No blankets!" So the cows go on strike and the chickens join them in solidarity. No blankets: no milk, no eggs! Will Farmer Brown give in to the animals demands? Will Jenny get her computer back? Find out in a hilariously "mooooo-ving" new musical about negotiation and compromise, based on the Caldecott Honor Book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin.

Spinning the words "Some Pig" in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever. This treasured tale, featuring mad-cap and endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship.
